I came across a strange headline this morning that made me do a double-take: Dr Goebbels threatens more anti-Jewish laws. I clicked over to the article at the London’s Telegraph and was further confounded to read the following:
Already as a first instalment, Field Marshal Goering has issued decrees applying to German Jews:
Imposing a collective fine of £83,000,000;
Barring them from wholesale and retail trade;
Confiscating their insurance claims; and
Ordering them to pay for damage in riots.
The article continues on to note that sentiment in the US for the Jewish plight in German was rising, and details an attempt made on Hitler’s life.
I’m not a Ph.D. in history, but I’m pretty sure this is old news. There’s been a spate of anti-Semitic news stories of late, but Nazis rising from the grave?
Turns out the Telegraph has a section of their site called Britain at War, where they republish old news stories from World War II. Today’s dispatch was originally printed on November 14, 1938.
Reading these dispatches is interesting, but at the same time harrowing, to think that the world saw all this going on so early on, and yet were either unable or unwilling to stop it.
